Horrible vent design flaw

We just bought and had this unit installed today. I picked this one specifically because it has two 500CFM fans (for a total of 1000 CFM) and was really excited to be able to cook bacon and saute things with a really good high powered exhaust. (In case you're wondering - CFM = Cubic Feet per Minute. It defines how much air can be moved through the system. With 1,000CFM, you should be able to fry bacon and barely be able to smell it in the next room.) On most microwaves, when you want to vent it outside, you open up a vent hole in the back (or top) then unscrew the fan and rotate it so it blows out the rear (or top) vent. On this model, it's different. You still open up the vent hole in the top, but instead of moving the fan, they provide some really flimsy metal plates to cover the exhaust fans at the top of the door where air would come out if you were wanting it to recirculate. IT. DOESN'T. WORK. About 70% of the air goes out the vent, but 30% of it blows right past the flimsy cheap metal plates back into the house. And I don't know where the 1,000CFM is, but it isn't on this appliance. My old microwave was 400CFM and it had far more exhaust power. We (the installers and I) went backwards and forwards through the manual, called Kitchen Aid tech support, and I even went up on the roof to verify it was venting some air out. We thought SURELY we have missed a step because Kitchen Aid could not possibly have designed such a terrible product. Nope - it was installed 100% correctly, there were no obstructions in the vent. Maybe if the plates weren't so flimsy, it might work. Maybe if they had some sort of seals, it might work. But even so, just think about it. If you were cooking bacon or something, tiny bits of grease get sucked up into the exhaust vent. The way they designed this, that grease would be sucked into the top of the microwave where it would sit forever. I bought it through Best Buy, but it's not an installation issue so all they can do is return the product and refund my money. Before going that route, I contacted Kitchen Aid again and their customer service was extremely impressive. They have a technician coming out on Monday to take a look at it. I don't think he'll be able to do anything with something that is a glaring design flaw, but I'll update my review with the findings after the visit. I've always been a huge fan of Kitchen Aid and I have a ton of kitchen aid appliances both at home and in my bakeries, but this particular product is a huge embarrassment to the Kitchen Aid brand and is not in alignment with the high quality products Kitchen Aid is synonymous with.

We have been very pleased with our choice of this over the range microwave. It is quiet during microwaving, fan is much less intrusive than the dedicated unit we had for 40 years and pulls more air/fumes as a bonus. Of particular notice, the end of cycle tone and reminder tones are a real treat! Just loud enough to hear but do not scare you when sounding off. Thank you KitchenAid!!!

We love the microwave, with the low profile that gives us a lot more light on the cook top below. If we could have vented to the outside, it would have been beneficial. The features are excellent. This would have been a 5-star rating except you CANNOT hear the buzzer! We had a warranty person look at the microwave and they even called a Whirlpool (they manufacture this brand) and had them listen to the buzzer. They indicated that this was typical, but I do not believe anyone would design a buzzer to be barely above audible decibel level. Crazy! You absolutely cannot hear at level 1 for sound setting, with your ear next to microwave you can barely hear level 2 (if no other noise in room) and level 3 is only slightly better. If water running in sink, you cannot hear ANY of the sounds. When microwave is running, the motor / microwave generator is 10X the decibel level so you just listen for the motor to turn off. Forget the buzzer!

The low profile design and WHISPER QUIET Ventilation System is simply outstanding. Also, the motor which is powerful literally catches the grease and Odors to push out clean fresh air. Couldn't ask for more! I would like to say though be careful if ordered by Homedepot as not all the technician as know how to install unit. We had severe issues as the unit could've fallen according to the second delivery team who had to order a new unit and reinstall at a later date. I would also say Kitchenaid or Whirlpool Corp really needs to focus on better customer service as far as working timely to get these matters worked out; they are just as much at fault as Home Depot for not enduring their retailers know how to install properly and so forth.

When we bought our new house the existing microwave was only 12" from the burner on the stove. Thats not safe. We installed this beauty and now we have 16" to work with. I love all the features of this microwave. I have one problem with the exhaust ventilation which I consider to be a major problem. It is powerful as advertised. I have it vented outside. Some of the exhaust comes out of the top left side and out of the top left door hinge. 100% of the exhaust should go outside! A service tech come out to fix it but after he spoke to KitchenAid tech support the answer was that is was normal operation because of the fan capacity. Designing a hood exhaust to recirculate some of the exhaust back into the kitchen makes no sense. Now I am being charged for a service call because it works normally. I have since seen other reviews complaining about the same issue. Also moisture occasionally gets between the glass. The answer here was again normal operation. How do I clean it later on? I've had many KitchenAid appliances over the years and this is the first time I've been disappointed.

In our remodel we realized we were not going to be able to eliminate the over the range microwave and I did not like how big and clunky those feel. I saw this and was skeptical at first but wow, it continues to impress. The light is brighter than our under cabinet lighting and the fan vents as well as a hood leaving no odor. We've been really pleased. I was concerned that the depth would be an issue but it hasn't at all. The exhaust works great and the LED lights are much better than my old larger microwave. Size wise I have used it for everything I needed. If you are really short you may find it a little harder to see inside. But for me it isn't. I'm 5' 7" the additional space between the cooktop and microwave more than makes up for the smaller size. We haven't added the trim back yet but will soon freshen up the paint.

I purchased this almost two months ago. Paying more money for less microwave space seemed odd until we realized what we were gaining: very valuable cooking space on our cooktop. We can stir large pots of sauce on the back burner without hitting our arms on the greasy underside of a full-sized mounted microwave. Also, the sleek design looks more like a fancy hood than a microwave. The fan is loud, but it clears the air immediately. The lighting is wonderfully bright. But do you want to know the best part? I reheated fettuccine alfredo on the "Melt Chocolate" setting, and the sauce DID NOT SEPARATE. I then reheated my child's macaroni and cheese: it stayed creamy, evenly heated, and did not separate. This is HUGE!!!!! I find I'm using my microwave more than I ever did. If you are looking for more stovetop room, I would highly recommend this product.

Overall, the idea is fabulous- a low profile microwave that also vents. Only problem, which is an annoyance almost every time we use the unit, is that the ring wheel supporting the glass plate is unstable. If an item is not place in the center of the glass plate, the plate can tilt because it is not well supported by the triangular ring. Also, it is very easy to knock the plate and ring out of line when adding or removing a dish. The ring itself floats freely and gets out of place easily. We placed the unit high (but lower than the manufacture's highest recommendation), so, even though I am taller than average, I have to get a step stool to line it up properly. This problem is especially dangerous when heating liquids.

Have had this KitchenAid product for over a month now and we are very pleased with its profile, cooking/heating prowess and all of its features. We did see the Whirlpool sister product at a slightly cheaper price, but decided on the premium product. It's a great product and was particularly pleased with the powerful vent underneath.

We've only had this for 2 weeks. We purchased it because it is LOW profile. Now I have enough space to see my back burners on the range. The lights are nice and bright. The 1000 watts are enough for us. It heats up food and/or liquids very quickly, better than our old microwave.

We bought this with all other appliances for the kitchen and they all look fantastic. We did a complete kitchen remodel and all new KitchenAid appliance were the way to go. The low profile gives you more clearance above the range and you do not sacrifice microwave capabilities.

Purchase this as a replacement for a over the range exhaust Hood. We have used many of the automatic settings and then very satisfied. My only complaint is the noise of the exhaust fan, it isn't any louder than what was originally in place however it is not quieter.

Super low profile which is better to use above today's high BTU ranges. Very powerful and it actually greets you with a "welcome" and when done states "enjoy". When was the last time your microwave made you smile? Best range/hood I have ever used. Pricey, but well worth it. Zero complaints. While your not going to fit a turkey in it, we really only needed a unit that would reheat a dinner plate, cup of coffee, Etc. And of course microwave popcorn!

I've had this installed in my kitchen now for about 2 weeks now and am very impressed with this small unit. It's quiet, has a powerful fan (2-500 cfm fans) and the lights can't be beat for illuminating the surface of your range. I have mine installed as recirculating (venting baffle included) and it eliminates smoke, grease and keeps that smoke alarm from going off if your searing a piece of meat on a high BTU burner. The compact height of the unit allows for large pots on the stove without compromising work space. As far as interior space, you can fit large bowls or glass casserole dishes with ease. Nice simple forward control panel, makes it easy to use. Highly recommend this unit. High quality and worth the money.
